It is estimated that approximately 13 percent of sworn law enforcement officers in the United States are women. However, when many executive-level female officers took the oath decades ago, they were joining departments that were not accustomed to having women in their ranks.

Chief Vera Bumpers was appointed as the first woman police chief at the METRO Police Department, one of the largest transit law enforcement agencies in Texas. She also serves as the President of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE).
