Season 1 | Episode 3: What's New In Blue: Coffee with a Cop feat. Sgt. Chris Cognac

In this episode of What's New in Blue, Sergeant Chris Cognac of the Hawthorne (CA) Police Department (HPD) discusses "Coffee with a Cop" - a nationwide initiative that provides officers and community members with a unique opportunity to connect over coffee. Sergeant Cognac was a part of the HPD team that created "Coffee with A Cop" in 2011, and he is the main National Instructor for the "Coffee with a Cop" training class. A true believer in the ability of individual officers making a difference in the communities they serve, he talks about how he used his networking and communication skills as a force multiplier, and how all agencies can put people who want to help the community with those in need of an opportunity.

Women in Law Enforcement from Indonesia visited with WIFLE President, Catherine Sanz on Monday, February 27, 2019. The delegates were exploring programs and policies that support women in law enforcement at the U.S. federal, state and local levels.

A local run organization is sponsoring a 10 mile run Sunday August 18, 2019 - 7:15 AM. Titled the Devil's Den 10 Mile, the run is an annual event. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the WIFLE Scholarship Fund. Use this link for more details and to sign up.

In December 2018 WIFLE participated in the Research Summit on Women in Policing.  Women in law enforcement from State, local, federal and international agencies and organizations came together to look at the current state of women in policing and identify where we need to go and the challenges and research gaps affecting women’s participation in the profession. Subsequent to that event, the National Institute of Justice in coordination with the Justice Clearinghouse will present a webinar series entitled Women in Law Enforcement.  

• June 6, 2019, at 1:00PM EST, The first presentation will be Women in Law Enforcement: Physical Fitness Standards and Testing
  This presentation will review relevant federal case law regarding gender and fitness standards. The US military and federal law enforcement recruit fitness testing policies will be compared to police academy fitness policies used in local, county and state police academies, highlighting rigorously tested models, designed to measure required physical performance levels without producing disparate outcomes.
  
  
• July 24, 2019, at 1:00 PM EST Women in Law Enforcement: Promotion & Assignment. 
  To truly impact the police field, women must attain leadership positions where they can make organizational decisions, affect culture, and inspire future generations. However, in 2013, women made up only 7% of police mid-level management and first line supervisors, and 2.7% of police chiefs in the United States. Due to a lack of research in this area, we have a limited understanding of the barriers and challenges that policewomen face in seeking promotions and navigating the upper ranks of law enforcement. In this webinar, Dr. Natalie Todak will cover existing evidence and promising directions for empirical research on this topic. Lieutenant Rachel Tolber of the Redlands (CA) Police Department will bring life to the evidence by drawing on first-hand experiences gained over the course of a 20-year police career.

On February 12, 2019 at from 11:30 A.M. - 1:00 PM, WIFLE Sponsor, Peter J. Jeffrey from the Jeffrey Law Group, PLLC will provide a lunchtime class Curves in the Road: A Primer on Federal Employee's Rights and Responsibilities.  This course will explore the common pitfalls that may befall Federal Executive Branch Employees during their careers.  Topics to be explored include: the pitfalls of social media use; the application of the Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch during a lapse in funding; the impact of Executive Order 13839 on settlement negotiations and Giglio impairments; and the intersection of fitness for duty, reasonable accommodation, and disability retirement for Federal Law Enforcement Officers.

This class will be held at the law offices of BakerHostetler, Washington Square 1050 Connecticut Ave. NW Washington, DC 200036-5403. The closest metro station is Farragut North (L street Exit) serviced by the Red line.  WIFLE’s General Counsel Barbara Linney has accepted a partnership offer at the law offices of BakerHostetler and we have decided to follow Barbara.
